Configure NoteDrop to match your workflow.
Opening Settings
Access settings via:
- Menu bar → NoteDrop → Settings
- Keyboard shortcut ⌘,
Settings uses a sidebar layout with five sections.
General
Core app behavior and folder access.
Behavior
- Launch at login: Start NoteDrop automatically when you log in.
- Parse folder names: Extract project details from folder names.
- Show in Dock: Display NoteDrop icon in the Dock.
- Check for updates automatically: Periodically check for new versions. A red dot on the menu bar icon shows when an update is available.
Defaults
- Correspondence folder name: The subfolder name used for saving notes (e.g., "Correspondence").
Folder Access
Grant NoteDrop access to your projects folder so it can save notes without prompting each time.
Finder Extension
Shows whether the Finder extension is active. If not detected, a link to System Settings lets you enable it directly.
Finder Context Menu
- Enable Finder context menu: Toggle the "New File" submenu in Finder's right-click menu.
- File types: Choose which file types appear in the "New File" menu (Text, Markdown, RTF).
Documents
Configure output format and document appearance.
Output Format
Choose how notes are saved:
- PDF: Professional PDF document with firm branding and formatted content.
- Markdown: Plain text file with YAML frontmatter containing all metadata.
- Both: Save PDF and Markdown simultaneously with the same filename.
You can also change the output format directly from the note creation panel using the format picker in the action bar.
Logo
Choose an image to display in the PDF header above your firm name. Supports PNG, JPEG, and TIFF. Recommended size: 200×60px or similar aspect ratio.
Document Details
- Firm Name: Your organization name (optional, appears in PDF header below the logo).
- Author Name: Your name (appears as author in PDFs).
Page Layout
- Page Size: US Letter or A4.
- Margins: Narrow, Standard, or Wide.
Date Format
- Medium: e.g., "8 Jan 2026 at 2:30 pm"
- Long: e.g., "8 January 2026 at 2:30 pm"
- ISO 8601: e.g., "2026-01-08T14:30:00"
Date Editing
Optional. Adds a date and time picker to the note panel so notes can be backdated or set to a specific date. Off by default.
Note Types
Manage the note types available in the picker.
Default Note Type
Select the note type that's pre-selected when creating a new note. Displayed as pill buttons for quick switching.
Built-in Types
Toggle visibility of built-in note types (File Note, Telephone Attendance, Conference Note, etc.). Hidden types won't appear in the note creation panel.
Custom Types
Add your own note types. Custom types can be reordered and deleted. Built-in types can only be shown or hidden.

- Industry Profile: Select your profession to configure PDF labels and folder parsing.
- PDF Label Preview: See how header labels will appear in your PDFs.
- Folder Parsing Preview: See how folder names will be parsed.
- Folder Detection: How project folders are identified (Numeric Prefix, Any Parseable, or Manual).
- Save Location: Where notes are saved within projects, including subfolder names.
Shortcuts
Configure keyboard shortcuts for NoteDrop.
Global Shortcut
- Record shortcut: Click the current shortcut to start recording a new one.
- Reset to default: Restore ⌃⌥⌘N.
